Bonnie Gull started off as a little pop-up selling fresh seafood from an old Hackney pie n’ mash shop, but just a year later Alex Hunter and Danny Clancy had set up shop in a permanent Fitzrovia beach shack. Now they’re expanding their fishy empire with a brand new opening, the Bonnie Gull Seafood Cafe at Exmouth Market.
The cafe, which opens on 22nd April, will serve lobster rolls, beer-battered Manx Queenies with paprika mayo; channel salt ’n’ pepper squid and Newspaper baked Cornish mackerel with choucroute and bramley apple and proper sticks of Blackpool rock.
Apparently this will all be dished out from a 1960s seafood cafe, which is to be “an ode to the faded glory of British seaside towns”. Obviously Alex Hunter and Danny Clancy are yet to visit the wondrous place that is Southend-on-Sea. The glory is alive and well at Peter Pan’s playground. In fact I’d go so far as to say it was THRIVING.
